Black cardamom (Amomum subulatum) is native to the Eastern Himalaya where it grows well amidst the cool, shaded well drained slopes. The one in this pouch comes from the hills around Kalimpong in West Bengal.

A versatile spice that goes well not only in pulao and biriyani but also in bakes and sweets. It is said to have a variety of health benefits and is used in Ayurveda for treating pain, increasing appetite, curing skin problems and overcoming nausea. It is also used as an ingredient in home remedies and some herbal teas.
